Kaminey – Dhan Te Nan Crime Thriller!

Image
Being monotonous can be really boring. Some days, suddenly you would like to break free, and look for something different; like a dieting person craves for junk food.   Amidst these art, serious movies the same thing happened to me; the result is, this week’s movie suggestion/review, bollywood masala entertainer- Kaminey! We were all born and brought up in a masala rich society, which is being reflected everywhere from birth to death; the kind of food we eat, the way we celebrate marriage, functions, even our funeral ceremony is different. Thus, no movie satisfies us as our local masala flavored movie does. However, this crime thriller differs from other clichéd formula based bollywood/kollywood films. Sets a perfect example, for an ideal entertainment movie. More importantly it is an original film, not copied from any international movies (as far as I know/heard!). Vishal Bharadwaj, is one of the two Indian contemporary film makers, I respect a

My Journey towards a perfect south Indian filter kaapi!

Image
Nothing can be matched with the magical aroma of south Indian filter kaapi.  It diffuses into the air, grasps you, enters your blood circulation reaches every cell and  tells something your brain without your knowledge.  No wonder you go crazy! This is true. Do you know, it can cause withdrawal symptoms? (kaapi withdrawal syndrome – delirium tremens!) I was not fortunate enough to be born in a filter kaapi drinking family. My first love (for coffee) started in 1991, when I joined college. It was love at first smell and taste. Whenever we visited Saravana Bhavan, opposite Salem new bus stand, I started noticing the aroma and taste of kaapi. On the contrary, in the hostel we used get some hot brown colored liquid (!?), many times you would get confused whether that was coffee, tea or mix of both. Even many restaurants do not serve a perfect filter kaapi. So my first love was blind (as it happens always!), on-and-off and short lived. Before joining PG in

Celda 211(Cell 211) - A Spanish Movie Review

Image
As my friends ordered, I thought of writing, a bit detailed movie suggestion/review. The reason, I have been so adamant in continuing movie suggestion/review is, I love writing (sathiyama ungala torture panra ennam illa!!).So, please don’t feel bad if you are not able to watch the movie. I watched this movie almost a year back. I came to know about it through rotten tomatoes. Have the [bad] habit of browsing rotten tomatoes, searching for award winning art house movies. After watching, it kept lingering in my mind for two to three days. May be I can say, this was one of the most entertaining movies I have ever seen. This movie won many Spanish awards (eight) and Hollywood official remaking is on. I don’t know how many Indian film makers unofficially doing that (A R Murugadoss, Shankar and others- with lots of masala!!). Story…A young prison guard (over)enthusiastically (angathan thappu pannittan) tours the prison, a day before joining duty, leaving his pregna

A scene at the Sea - An innocent poetic love story!

Thanks all, for your encouragements. Hopefully, some of you (at least) enjoyed the movie cell 211. This week’s movie is completely a different one. In my opinion, movie taste (not only) differs from person to person (fortunately!). It probably depends on his or her personal life experiences, maturity, literacy and personality. So, intentionally I chose a contrasting genre for this week. This film has no villains. No action sequences. No suspense. No turns and twists. No intelligent script….still thoroughly enjoyable. Like a poem, slow and leisurely portrayed story. Poems with even fewer lines have a longer impact. The film does exactly the same.  I had watched this movie many times, and went through that pleasant experience once again for this review. I need to thank Mr.Myskin-a tamil film maker- for introducing Takeshi Kitano (though not directly- accidentally) to me. Kitano is a versatileJapanese film maker (very interesting personality-will write

An ordinary Indian Cricket Fan’s (emotional) pulambal!

Image
You might ask me, what qualification I have to write about Indian cricket. Do you think I should have any other qualification other than just being an ordinary Indian citizen? You are wrong, then. We billion Indians have every (birth) right to have billion views about cricket! Ok, if you insist me I will give one more. I was a twelfth man in our batch-cricket team (who played a significant role in winning matches-by not playing!). Fine, let us concentrate on the current boiling affairs. Like anyone of you, I am also very disappointed with Indian team’s performance, to be more specific Indian Men Cricket team’s (on field!) performance. However, this is not the first time we do so, right? Just say hypothetically, India had won the test series, how we would have reacted. Dhoni and team mates would have been considered as super heroes. Since they have lost, you know what would happen to them (stone pelting etc). The problem is, we are all genetically emotional! We know o

A separation – an intriguing family thriller!

Image
It’s an intense family drama. (Dramavaa-nnu neenga alarradhu kekkudhu-Visu, V.sekar effect!). Family without drama is unreal, right?  I too, agree with you. But, there is no real melodrama in this movie. Rather, it is unusually brisk, for a story based on family affairs with events unrolling fast and with many unexpected twists. Hence, with your permission, I call it as an intense family thriller (new genre). “A separation” is a critically acclaimed Iranian film, written and directed by Asghar Farhadi, and won the Oscars for best foreign film in 2012. It was the first Iranian film to do so, and won many other international awards too, obviously. This movie, truly deserves those awards, and it is one of the finest films I have ever seen. Perhaps, the best among those I reviewed so far. Sometimes you wonder in spite being a small country with lesser population, they make so many quality movies, why can’t we? If you analyze, we are the one to be blamed. I feel, we are
